• New Agrarian Program Director

Quivira (www.quiviracoaltion.org), a Santa Fe-based nonprofit that aims to shift current practices of agriculture and land stewardship to those that produce good food, support meaningful livelihoods in rural places, sustain biodiversity, and remedy the impacts of climate change. We do this work through agricultural apprenticeship, land and water restoration, and farmer- and rancher-led knowledge exchange.

We are currently seeking a director for our New Agrarian Apprenticeship Program (NAP). The Quivira Coalition currently has a staff of ten who work primarily in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The NAP team consists of three staff members, one in Colorado, one in Montana, and one in New Mexico.

NAP offers apprenticeships in regenerative agriculture in partnership with mentor ranchers and farmers working on large landscapes in the Western US. We currently have 15 mentor sites located in California, Colorado, Montana, and New Mexico. The program's mission is to normalize intergenerational, hands-on learning in regenerative agriculture; we aim to increase the number of ranches and farms in the west offering apprenticeships as a routine part of their operation. NAP provides the next generation of producers with hands-on mentoring from dedicated land stewards who practice regenerative methods of food production; provide excellent animal care; and are skilled and dedicated teachers. It also offers training to seasoned producers on teaching and communicating their experience to apprentices.

The NAP Director is a people-oriented facilitator and team leader who has experience in the nonprofit sector developing programs and fundraising; has worked with farmers and ranchers; and understands experiential education pedagogy. An ideal candidate is passionate about solving current food systems and ranching/farming succession challenges; working with a dedicated nonprofit team; fundraising and program development; and regenerative ranching and farming on large landscapes.

The NAP Director is responsible for team management, guiding program development and implementation, and collaborative fundraising. This person will work closely with the NAP Team to ensure all necessary tasks required to effectively run, manage and expand the program are completed.

This position can be based out of Quivira's Santa Fe offices, or remotely, with the candidate ideally located in the Cheyenne, Denver/Boulder, or Santa Fe areas. The position will require a person who can lead a collaborative team remotely; is self-directed, organized, and computer literate; has a flexible schedule to be available early in the morning, in the evening, and on some weekends to accommodate the schedules of mentors and apprentices; and has the flexibility to travel for up to a week at a time to ranches and farms. The position also requires travel to conferences, presentations, and other work events. About 75% of this position is computer/office based, and 25% of this position will be spent travelling to meet with funders, present on the work of the program, and visit mentor ranches and farms.

Desired Qualifications

Nonprofit program and team management experience
Exceptional organizational, writing, and other communication skills
Fundraising experience
Experience working in agriculture, particularly on large landscapes (eg. ranches, grain farms, etc.)
Experience developing experiential/immersive educational programming
Experience working as a facilitator, particularly in an educational or agricultural setting
Comfort and familiarity with word processing, spreadsheets, G Suite, Asana and Slack
Ability and desire to work in a computer-based office setting
Residence in Colorado, New Mexico, or Wyoming
Willingness to travel and work on the road for up to a week at a time
Willingness/ability to be available evenings and weekends as necessary

Specific duties and Responsibilities

Coordinate NAP Team to achieve the strategic goals of the program
Make sure team has the direction, support, and information needed to execute the work of the program generally and frundraising specifically
Oversee program evaluation and evolution based on feedback from program stakeholders
Work closely with the executive director and NAP team to hone the program mission and vision, and develop aligned work plans

In cooperation with the executive director, expand the reach of the New Agrarian Program by designing, funding, and implementing new ideas that provide leadership training, networking, and capacity-building support for new agrarians and prospective mentors
In cooperation with the executive director, build rapport with existing and potential major donors for the New Agrarian Program. Strive to secure multi-year funding
In concert with the executive director and office administrator, create and manage the program budget to ensure financial sustainability and longevity
Facilitate program growth while maintaining high quality standards and regenerative agriculture criteria for prospective mentors

Program Coordination and Development
Help design and implement necessary changes to ensure ongoing success in the apprenticeship program
Collaborate with educational partners, such as Holistic Management International, to ensure a well-rounded educational experience for apprentices
Oversee marketing, advertising, outreach and public relations for NAP
Help design and develop new and creative ways to advance program goals (e.g. job fairs, newsletters, local outreach, collaboration, etc.)
Maintain a growing network of partner organizations, new agrarians, and established producers; help facilitate connections between current and future generations of food producers and land stewards
Coordinate with program partners on collaborative grant projects and apprenticeship network building

Mentor and Apprentice Support
Provide support with mentor/apprentice relationships as needed; foster professional development
Implement application process for potential new program mentors; continually seek out new and prospective mentors to design and develop new apprenticeship opportunities
Ensure good mentor rapport and successful apprenticeships at each mentor location
Conduct in-depth, annual check-ins with mentors to debrief most recent apprenticeships and discuss program components, successes and challenges
Maintain regular contact with mentors and apprentices to check in on apprenticeships; facilitate any necessary conversations to support good communication

Regularly engage local, regional and national agrarian communities by conducting site visits to potential host ranches and farms, and to other agricultural apprenticeship programs and agricultural advocacy organizations
Conduct site visits and outreach with the aim to recruit new mentor operations into the New Agrarian Program
Actively contribute to strengthening and expanding of the national Ag Apprenticeship Learning Network, a national network of agricultural apprenticeship programs, with the objective of raising standards for training and education of new agrarians and increasing capacity for individual programs to expand and thrive
In collaboration with the entire NAP Staff, coordinate communications for the program including social media, press opportunities, and documentation
Represent Quivira and the New Agrarian Program at relevant events in the community and by actively seeking opportunities to present to relevant conferences

Terms of Employment

Reports to the executive director
Full time, salary DOE, with flexible work schedule
