High Country News, an award-winning magazine that covers the modern American West, seeks a multi-talented visual journalist to join the team in rural Paonia, Colorado. Work with our art director to design and produce pages for a twice-monthly magazine; find/assign great photojournalism for print magazine and fast-paced website, including photo stories for print and web, and create data visualizations for print and web, among other duties. We need someone with good news judgment who can work closely with art director and editors, who understands the West and the issues we cover, and who can maintain the quality, high-level journalism and storytelling we're known for. News design and photo editing experience, Adobe Creative Suite proficiency and familiarity with High Country News are top requirements. Full-time, fully benefited position starts in May. General Statement of Duties: Helps produce High Country News, both the print magazine and online content, by acquiring photographs and artwork, designing magazine and web pages and creating data visualizations.
Supervision Exercised: None
Supervision Received: Works under the general supervision of the Art Director.
Example of Duties: Duties will include but are not limited to:
-Designs pages and helps produce the print magazine and hcn.org.
-Conducts photo and art research for print and online, and processes images.
-Works with art director and web team to pitch and edit original photo stories for magazine and web.
-Works with photographers and raises the profile of HCN within the photo community.
-Archives materials for each issue and cleans up files. Manages pay sheet and contributor Rolodex.
-Takes photographs as needed of staff and visitors to HCN.
-Works on occasional design or print projects for other HCN departments.
-Produces print magazine in absence of art director.
-Other duties as assigned

Special Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
-Knowledge of fundamentals of journalism and principles and practices of effective editorial design and storytelling, photojournalism and data visualization for print and web, as well as advertising and promotional design.
-Proficiency in use of Mac operating system, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as web production, content-management, virtual office and other software, and ability to learn and effectively use new software.
-Ability to produce work accurately and efficiently on deadline while managing many responsibilities.
-Ability to create pages/materials within the design guidelines established by art director.
-Ability to work well in a team environment and communicate clearly and in a timely manner, both orally and in writing.
-Ability to maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, on- and off-site staff, freelancers and the public.
-Desire to work in a not-for-profit environment and willingness to support the needs of the organization.

Education and Experience:
-Training in the fundamentals of journalism and photojournalism, desktop publishing, graphics and web software programs.
-Journalism degree and experience preferred.
-Two years' experience in news design, photo editing and graphics. Or any other combination of education and experience.

Working Hours:
This is an exempt, paid position based on 40 hours per week, requiring some flexibility to meet workloads.
